Gili Eco Trust
We are helping another eco-conscious company to help the planet. A portion of every handmade SOP sun cream purchased helps Gili Eco Trust to protect coral reefs and fight for plastic free oceans.
Gili Eco Trust has grown and expanded its activities from marine conservation to waste management and sustainable eco tourism. From 2004, Gili Eco Trust started the Biorock project, creating artificial reefs and restoring the natural habitat of thousands of fish in previously destroyed areas of reef. Gili Eco Trust also supervises the waste management on Gili Trawangan from collection to processing recyclable materials and transporting them off the island. Next to these two huge campaigns, there is a lot going on with smaller eco-projects which you can read more about on this website, such as working horse healthcare clinics and educational workshops for kids, tourists and hospitality staff.
The Birth of the Bamboo All Terrain Wheelchair BBW: “Through a discussion with our good friend and CEO of Classroom Of Hope (www.classroomofhope.org), Duncan Ward, we learnt of an unfortunate situation in North Lombok where a 12-year-old boy, Nasrudin had been left disabled by the recent earthquakes. As this boy had no wheelchair he sadly had to drag himself on the ground to get to school and we felt in our hearts that we had to find a solution for him. After brainstorming we chose to design and build a bamboo all terrain wheelchair using locally sourced bamboo and mountain-bike bicycle wheels which would be easy to source and repair in remote areas.”
